    Introduction

Emertxe Information Technologies was a sponsor at IEEE ICVTTS 2026, the 3rd IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Technology and Transportation Systems (ICVTTS 2026), organized by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) Bangalore Section in association with GITAM (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru. Held on 18th and 19th September 2026, the conference brought together researchers, academicians, industry experts, and students to exchange ideas, present cutting-edge research, explore emerging innovations across key thrust areas including automotive cyber security, software-defined vehicles, electric vehicles, space technologies, and IoT & digital twins for automotive applications.

The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society advances technologies in mobility, including electric vehicles, autonomous systems, and vehicular communications, connecting professionals and researchers worldwide through conferences, publications, and technical initiatives. Its Bangalore Section, which co-organized ICVTTS 2026, is an active regional chapter known for hosting technical talks, workshops, and industry-academia collaborations focused on EVs, connected vehicles, and smart mobility โ€” with strong industry ties and engagement through its Student Branch Chapters. The IEEE conference GITAM Bengaluru, ICVTTS 2026 itself was conceived to facilitate industry-academia collaboration, showcase emerging innovations in autonomous vehicles, EVs and UAVs, enable networking with global experts, and help industry stay ahead of trends in inter/intra-vehicular communication, AI in transportation, and sustainability.

Day One: Exploring the IEEE Ecosystem, GITAM's Innovation Landscape, and SDV Collaboration

The first day centered on the conference’s inaugural proceedings, with Emertxe represented by Jayakumar Balasubramanian, Director. The session offered a deeper understanding of the broader IEEE ecosystem and opened conversations around potential collaboration with academia and key industry players such as Harman, TVS Motor Company, and Samsung, particularly in the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) space โ€” one of the conference’s core thrust areas.

As part of the day’s proceedings, delegates also got a closer look at the various areas of work happening within GITAM’s own innovation ecosystem. This included a showcase spanning the Sirena Technologies R&D Centre at GITAM Bengaluru, a dedicated lab focused on next-generation robotics and embedded AI; the university’s Venture Development Centre, which supports student entrepreneurship and incubation; the Technology Exploration and Product Engineering (TEPE) Centre, built around hands-on, frugal-innovation product development; and several of GITAM’s ten Centers of Excellence, each concentrating research and training resources within a focused discipline.

This walkthrough of GITAM’s ongoing work across robotics, embedded AI, entrepreneurship, and applied product engineering opened further collaboration discussions with the academia โ€” exploring possibilities for joint initiatives spanning curriculum development, applied research, and skilling programs that could benefit both students and industry. Taken together, the day reflected a shared interest in connecting research, industry, and skilling efforts as the automotive sector moves toward increasingly software-driven, connected, and intelligent vehicle platforms.

Day Two: A Hands-On Workshop on Deploying Vision AI at the Edge

On the second day, Emertxe led a hands-on workshop titled โ€œDeploying Vision AI at the Edge: A Hands-On Helmet Detection,โ€ delivered by Mubeen Jukaku, Technology Head at Emertxe Information Technologies. The workshop was designed for academicians, industry professionals, research scholars, and UG/PG students, and required only a laptop and a Google account to participate โ€” keeping the barrier to hands-on learning deliberately low.

The Emertxe Edge AI workshop explored how computer vision models can be deployed directly on-device rather than in the cloud, enabling real-time intelligence for transportation applications. Using a pre-trained YOLO model fine-tuned for helmet detection, participants built a real-time system to identify two-wheeler riders with and without helmets โ€” a practical application directly relevant to road safety and automated traffic enforcement.

The workshop then moved into the core challenge of edge deployment: optimizing models through quantization and converting them into lightweight formats such as TensorFlow Lite and ONNX, followed by benchmarking the trade-offs between detection accuracy, inference speed, and model size. By the end of the Emertxe Edge AI Workshop, participants had walked through the complete pipeline โ€” from training and object detection to model optimization and edge-ready deployment. The discussion closed by connecting these techniques to a wider set of use cases, from vehicular and surveillance systems to industrial and smart-mobility computer vision applications, giving participants a template they could apply well beyond the helmet-detection example used in the session.

    Looking Ahead

Emertxe’s participation at ICVTTS 2026 โ€” from exploring collaboration possibilities and GITAM’s innovation ecosystem on Day One, to deliver hands-on technical training on Day Two โ€” reflects its continued commitment to strengthening the bridge between industry and academia. Such platforms offer valuable opportunities to learn from ongoing developments across the industry while contributing practical, deployable skills back into the academic ecosystem.
