What is online assessment system? How will it help me?

Emertxe’s online test platform is used to make any-time, any-where assessments for our students. By having this makes our evaluation system very dynamic that changes from time-to-time, thereby keeping it in sync with industry needs. This also helps students to refer back certain important questions during the time of placements.

How ECIP course is different from ECEP?

Emertxe, with its core expertise in Embedded and IoT domains, offers two major placement oriented courses when it comes to freshers:

  • Emertxe Certified Embedded Professional (ECEP)
  • Emertxe Certified IoT Professional (ECIP)

The ECEP primarily focuses on ‘core’ technologies of building a device from the scratch. For example ECEP has heavy focus on lower level OS (ex: Embedded Linux) so that participants will get complete understanding of building an Embedded device.

The ECIP course primarily focuses on ‘build-and-integrate’ technologies of building an overall IoT solution. This includes programming IoT device, IoT Gateway and them using any of the popular cloud platforms (ex: IBM Watson). Here the participant may not expected to know the lower level programming details, can operate at higher level of abstraction.

However there are some common points between ECEP and ECIP (ex: C programming) which is essential for both of them.

What skills I will be able to learn in IoT programming course?

In the ECIP course you will be learning three skills under four different categories:

  • Foundations: This includes basic and core skills like Algorithms, Optimization, Linux platform, HW interfacing, Protocols and OS / Multitasking
  • Programming languages: In this course you will be learning programming using Advanced C and Python. In both of them you will learn right from the basics to advanced aspects, using which a working program can be created in an IoT device / IoT gateway
  • Hardware platforms: In this course you will be exposed to various standard and open source hardware platforms like Raspberry pi and Arduino and more in the similar lines. Having said that the hardware platforms tend to change from time-to-time, depending on the industry requirements. In our course we will be focusing on core aspects like reading data sheets, programming a particular peripheral using a software program and how to interface them with any external I/O or peripheral devices
  • IoT specific skills: To build specific knowledge, in this course you will be learning about:
Which IoT programming languages I will learn in this course?

In our IoT course students will be learning two programming languages C and Python. You will be implementing projects on both programming languages.

In spite of getting introduced in 1970s, the C programming language provides best optimized machine code, low level programming features, dynamic memory management and portability. On the other hand Python is a versatile interpreted language which is easy to learn with rich set of libraries. Both languages are very popular in the IoT domain getting hands-on projects implemented in them will really help you to take-off your career.

What roles protocols play in IoT?

As you may be aware IoT is all about connecting anything-to-everything, where protocols play the important role in providing connectivity. These protocols can be categorised based on many factors like functionality, range and power consumption. It can be further categorized into:

  • Peripheral connectivity protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN etc…)
  • Device-to-Gateway connectivity protocols (Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth etc…)
  • Gateway-to-cloud connectivity protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, CoAP, MQTT, AMQP, IPv4, IPv6 etc…)

As a IoT developer, you need to have good hands on experience with various protocols and their internals (headers, packet structure, handshake, error handling, advantages and disadvantages) so that you can make appropriate choice of them for your IoT solution.

What do you mean by foundations? Why is it important?

As the saying goes ‘technologies go through rapid changes whereas foundation won’t’ which is the primary reason why you should master foundations. For example many new programming languages are techniques will come into the foray of IoT as it matures, foundational aspects of all programming languages (example – Algorithms) won’t change. Hence in our IoT course we give lot of importance on foundations such as

  • Algorithms
  • Optimisation
  • Linux platform
  • Hardware interfacing
  • Protocols
  • OS and multitasking

Once you learn these foundations, you will be able to apply these skills in any new technology that you come across and learn them at ease. In our IoT course we maintain a very good balance between building foundations and learning advanced skills to that participants are positioned as lifelong learners in the careers.

Soft skills & IoT Career FAQ

What is Disha? What are the components part of it?

Disha (meaning “direction”) is career track component part of the Embedded Systems course – ECEP. Along with technical skills it is important for students to get trained in some other areas (ex: facing interviews, basic soft skills). Disha is an initiative from Emertxe to train our students in this area as well. This consist of the following components:

  • Resume preparation workshop – How to create an impressive resume for placement companies?
  • Interview facing workshop – How to face technical and HR interviews effectively? What are the best practices to follow? How to avoid common mistakes?
  • Seminars – Interaction with industry experts on experience sharing, soft skills and career building
  • Counselling – Career counselling / Interview tips / Higher study support (ex: LOR) to students

In summary, with our years of experience in the industry we bring in practical, implementable aspects in DISHA so that students achieve the goal of placements.

What is resume preparation workshop?

Creating impressive resume is very important item. Placement companies look for specific skillsets and its correct representation before shortlisting them for fresher jobs. As a part of Disha we conduct workshop for creating it by calling out skillsets in an impressive manner. By the end of the workshop students will have a professional quality resume ready that can be sent to companies for placements. Have a look into a sample resume and resume preparation workshop slides to get an idea.

Do you offer any specific coaching for written tests?

Yes. As a part of our course, regular weekly objective tests are conducted meant to prepare you continuously for interviews in core embedded companies. Technically, these tests are of extremely high standard, which will set you up for clearing written test of any company. In order to deliver we have an online test ecosystem using which you can take it up any-time anywhere. Along with weekly tests ample amount of practise tests are given to students which will make you clear written test with ease.

On the other hand companies expect students to perform well in their Engineering Aptitude (ex: Digital electronics) and General Aptitude (ex: Quantitative) for which we expect students to prepare on their own. We can provide necessary resources (ex: Question banks) which students can practise before appearing for a company’s written test.

What is interview preparation workshop?

Once the resume gets shortlisted and clearing the written test, next step is to attend technical and HR interviews. Interviewers expect candidates to demonstrate certain key things (technical capability, problem solving skills, representing skill, team player etc.) which plays an important role in giving out a job offer. In Emertxe regular workshops are conducted to make you confident in facing interviews by addressing all aspects of interviews.

What are the Job opportunities in India for freshers in IoT?

IoT is in heavy demand due to many reasons. Some statistics* are as follows:

The total installed base of Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices worldwide is projected to amount to 30.9 billion units by 2025, a sharp jump from current installation base.
These devices are expected to connect about 4 billion people across the world
In India more than 60 Million USD investments have been made into IoT based start-ups
About 1 Billion USD investment is expected by the Government segment alone (example – smart cities)
In Industrial segment, about 55% of the share is going to come from Industrial IoT (IIoT)

Please many devices would require multiple technologies to work together in a serious way which opens a lot of career opportunities for engineers.

Trending jobs in IoT for freshers and experienced position?

Job trends in IoT requires engineers to build skills based on a ‘T’ model mentioned below. The horizontal part of T requires engineers to have knowledge on Sensors, Devices, Network, Cloud applications and IoT protocols. On the vertical part of T required to have expertise on IoT Architecture, Programming skills, Integration skills, Hardware knowledge and non-functional requirements.

Along with that companies are expecting to have demonstrated output in terms of projects to validate the learning (shown in the right side of the T). Modern job trends suggest having these type of skills will place an entry level engineer in a high-paced career path

IoT skills are too broad, Can you help me to demystify them?

Yes it is correct – IoT skills are very broad in nature! It can be categorised into:

Embedded IoT: It consists of building a connected devices – which consists of IoT devices and IoT gateways. Followed by that it includes various protocols that connects the IoT device with IoT gateway and eventually all of them into IoT platform running in the cloud. Primarily this requires knowledge of micro-controller programming, system programming, OS and networking / protocol skills.
Application IoT: This mainly consist of a network interface which receives data from IoT device (via HTTP), Scalable Web server, Database and Data Analytics / Artificial Intelligence platform to synthesize and report the data in form of dashboards and reports. These reports are eventually used to derive meaningful insights / actions which are getting triggered all the way from sensors.

In Emertxe’s IoT course stress is given on programming the Embedded IoT part and integrating them with Application IoT mentioned below. Of course one can work on getting expertise in Application IoT also but placing them in a single course makes it too large. Given the strength Emertxe has in the Embedded space, our course is carved with more Embedded focus.

Can I choose a particular technology vertical in IoT?

Of course yes. When you are starting your career, we recommend you build horizontal or generic skills so that you will be able to fit yourself anywhere in the IoT domain. Once you get some good amount of experience with one particular area (example – IoT protocols) for about two years, you can then choose a particular the vertical (example – Automotive) and build deep expertise by becoming a specialist / expert in that particular vertical specific skills.

Why non-functional aspects (ex: security) are important in IoT?

IoT solutions are typically complex in nature where heterogeneous entities (sensors-> devices-> gateways-> cloud->application) are supposed to work together in order to provide an end-to-end solution working. In such cases it is very important to consider non-functional aspects (scalability, security, reliability, high availability) which plays a very critical role to provide the desired end user experience for the customers. Any loophole (example – security) will make the whole solution non-viable for the customers.

Hence along with programming and functional IoT skills, it is also very important for engineers to process the IoT Architecture and non-functional related aspects, so that you will be able to build a production quality system. Because building a prototype for laboratory use is significantly different from building a production level IoT solution for which such a non-functional knowledge plays a very key role.

In Emertxe’s IoT course you will be provided with exposure on the non functional aspects as well, so that you will keep them into consideration while building your IoT solution in real-time.

Real-time IoT Project FAQ

What type of projects are provided as a part of IoT course?

In each module (except introductory ones) students are provided with a set of projects. Overall we have a huge

list of IoT projects (runs into 100s of topics) on each module however our mentoring team have a list of prioritized projects which are industry relevant. These projects can be applied in domains like Automotive, Telecommunication, Network Security, Distributed computing, Consumer electronics etc. all centred around embedded and IoT.

Mentors will recommend our students a particular project and provide an overall view of applying various Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) principles. They will also provide you with high level requirement and design recommendations which the student need to take up and implement. After implementation the mentor will inspect the project in terms of various standard industry practices (ex: code quality, readability, portability) and grade them. This holistic approach ensures students are able to apply what they have learnt in a particular module. By the end of the course, students would have 7-8 project around various IoT modules taught in the course and showcase to the placement companies, which will create an excellent positive impression about skills and capabilities.

To get a view of list of projects please look into our Emertxe – Technical Resource Library and clicking on the Industry projects list section to get a glance of what you will be working. Please note our TRL goes through continuous updates on a regular basis.

After finishing IoT course, what job roles can I take-up?

Emertxe’s IoT course it will open up a bunch of for different roles and responsibilities for engineering graduates. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Programmer and developer of IoT Device
  • Integration engineer to integrate IoT Device with sensors and external peripherals
  • Vertical specific application development
  • Design and develop an IoT gateways
  • Multitasking application development in IoT gateways
  • Integration of the IoT devices / IoT gateways with cloud platform
  • IoT Cloud platform API development
  • IoT non-functional features development (example – security)

IoT testing – System testing, Non-functional testing, Integration testing, Automation testing etc.

Do you have IoT projects based on Arduino?

Yes. Since we have high Embedded focus in our course we ensure students implement projects on a non-OS (controlled based) boards like Arduino and OS (Linux) based boards like Raspberry Pi. Apart from that for introductory modules like C students are provided with PC based projects. So in combination you will be implementing projects in various platforms to get a flavour of each one of them.

However our mentoring team strongly believes that IoT platforms continue to change with new boards getting released into the market on a continuous basis. So our recommendation is focus on core fundamentals (Excellent Design, Optimization, User interface, Error handling etc…) so that you will be able to implement them on any board.

How beneficial are these Embedded and IoT projects?

Projects are actual testimony that you have learned and know a particular technology well. For a placement company, they would like to see some differentiating factor compared to other college freshers by which they can get an assurance, that the student indeed implemented something on their own. By implementing and showcasing good quality 7-8 projects you can really increase your chances of getting selected in a core company. Bottom-line, all the more companies recruiting IoT technology specific freshers look forward for a quick ramp-up time to deliver their customer projects, which is accommodated in the IoT course syllabus provided by Emertxe.

Will I be using Python programming for coding my projects?

In our IoT course students will be learning two programming languages namely C and Python.

How these skills will helps me to build an IoT Application?

As you may be aware, the complete IoT solution has multiple components namely sensors, IoT device, IoT gateway, IoT protocols and eventually connecting to any of the cloud solution. For the user ultimately these cloud solutions will help interpret lot of data and make some meaningful insights and enable making critical decisions.

In ECIP course you will be learning all the critical skills that plays an important role in each of the aspects of IoT as mentioned above. For example will be learning about sensors and micro-controller programming (Arduino module) and OS based application programming (Raspberry pi module) and Protocols (like MQTT) and cloud integration module (using Amazon / Microsoft / Open source IoT cloud). These combined skills will enable you to build the complete IoT solution.

If i'm interested in a specific topic for project, will mentors help?

It depends. As long as the project is within the scope of the course subjects our mentors will definitely support you in guiding you for implementation. However if the topic is very different they may try their best to support by giving some high level inputs.

Which hardware will I be learning, Raspberry pi or Arduino?

In the ECIP course, you will be getting hardware exposure in multiple angles. To start with you will be exposed to programming a non-OS based hardware which is called as micro-controllers. In ECIP course you will be using Arduino as a platform using which you will be learning how to read data sheets, implementing interrupt service routines, various protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, WiFi, Bluetooth) interfacing various different peripherals (Timers, Counters, Interrupts) and implementing an application using programming language like C.

After you build hands-on experience with microcontrollers, you will be exposed to and OS based hardware platform like Raspberry Pi, using which you will be able to build an IoT gateway. Typically IoT gateway is a powerful device which requires any Operating System (OS like Linux or Raspbian OS) running in it. It requires you to learn some other critical OS concepts like multitasking, scheduling, resource Management and various related protocols (HTTP, CoAP, MQTT, AMQP, IPv4, IPv6, 6LoWPAN) to program the IoT gateway.

Our mentoring team strongly believes that hardware platforms tend to change as industry requirement becomes more advanced. Hence taking a hardware / board specific approach will not scale participants in the long term. Hence learning methodology is also focuses on generic aspects of hardware so that, you will be able to learn apply them in any hardware.

In summary as a IoT developer you will be learning how to program a hardware by designing, developing, running debugging a complete Application on your own on a OS or a non-OS based hardware.
